May 22, 2025Building stability step-by-step | Dana’s Story

Challenges like financial hardships, housing instability, and mental health struggles affect countless veterans, and for Navy Veteran Dana, these were just some of the few she was facing. After serving her country, Dana faced a series of hardships that left her searching for purpose and stability.
“I was living in my car, in hotels. It wasn’t stable,” Dana said, but with dedication and support of HVAF she found her way to a brighter future.
The weight of the challenges of homelessness was staggering, but Dana never gave up on the hope that a better future was possible. She persevered through uncertainty and sought out the help she needed—a step that led her to HVAF.
“When I came to HVAF, I was at my lowest point, I didn’t know if I’d be able to turn my life around, but the moment I walked through those doors, I knew things could be different.”
The first step on Dana’s path to stability was housing and very quickly she was enrolled in our transitional housing which gave her the bedrock of stability she desperately needed.
That’s when the real work began…
With HVAF’s support, Dana began the difficult process of rebuilding her life. She didn’t just receive resources, but a community that genuinely cared about her success.

“I had been working toward a goal for so long, but everything felt so far away. “Through HVAF, I learned it was possible. They were with me every step of the way, giving me the confidence to keep going.”
Step by step, Dana set achievable goals and began to see them come to fruition. She found meaningful work, regained her sense of self-worth, and started building a more secure and hopeful future. With each milestone, Dana gained confidence and a newfound determination to not only thrive herself but to give back.
For countless veterans, having access to these types of resources means the difference between remaining stuck in a cycle of hardship and finding the stability they deserve. Dana overcame her struggles because she refused to give up and because HVAF gave her the tools and support to succeed.
