Turning The Page To 2026!
January 14, 2026FROM ROCK BOTTOM TO ROCK SOLID | BRIAN’S STORY

When you support HVAF, you aren’t just funding shelter or paying for a meal. You are providing a turning point for veterans who have experienced the hardest moments of their lives. You are giving these heroes the stability they need to rebuild, recover, and dream again.
Brian, an Army veteran who served three years active duty and two years in the reserves, knows firsthand how quickly life can change. After finding himself in legal trouble and battling addiction, he hit what he calls his “second rock bottom.” But because of your generosity and the programs you support, his story didn’t end there.
Brian joined the Army at 20 years old, serving as a fire support specialist and later as a motor transport operator. He served his country honorably for five years. After discharging, he worked hard to put down roots but struggled to find his path.
That transition to civilian life is rarely a straight line. Legal issues and substance abuse challenges led Brian to a place of instability. By the summer of 2024, his situation had become critical.
“My life was in disarray before I got to HVAF,” Brian admits. “I thought I would always be down.”
Brian’s situation had reached a breaking point—he lacked stable housing, employment, and a reliable support network. What he needed was far more than just a place to stay; he needed a support system to help him rebuild his life. Thanks to your generosity, that is exactly what he found when he walked through our doors.
Feeling overwhelmed but determined to make a change, Brian reached out to HVAF to see how we could help him turn his life around. Soon after, he was connected with a dedicated case manager who took the time to understand his unique challenges and goals. Together, they worked to create a tailored plan that addressed both his immediate needs and long-term aspirations. This quick turnaround gave Brian a renewed sense of hope and the stability he had been seeking for so long. “It felt like someone finally saw me and cared,” Brian said.
Your support makes transformations like Brian’s possible.
Brian moved into HVAF’s newly restored Manchester Apartments. After a devastating fire, these units were rebuilt to provide veterans with a safe environment—and for Brian, it became a crucial stepping stone toward rebuilding his life. “HVAF is the one that picked me up from that second rock bottom,” Brian shared.
With secure housing at Manchester, Brian began focusing on his sobriety with renewed determination. He actively participated in HVAF’s substance abuse recovery groups and worked closely with his HVAF Peer Mentor, Patrick. These sessions not only gave Brian the tools to maintain sobriety but also connected him with a community of fellow veterans navigating similar struggles. The experience, as Brian describes it, was “life-changing.” “I’m sober now and maintaining that wouldn’t have been possible without Patrick and my group,” he said.
Determined to forge a new path, Brian set his sights on the future. He enrolled in VetWorks, HVAF’s workforce development initiative designed to help veterans transition back into the workforce. Through a 10-week internship focused on revitalizing the downtown area, Brian found purpose, structure, and a renewed sense of confidence. Inspired by his progress, he decided to pursue a lifelong dream. With VetWorks’ guidance, Brian began enrollment at IU Indianapolis to begin completion of his bachelor’s degree. Classes start this year. “I’ve got 13 and a half months left, and I will have my bachelor’s,” he said proudly.
This fall brought even more exciting news. After years of instability, Brian secured permanent housing—a place he can finally call his own!
Now, with a stable foundation, Brian is focused on completing his education and building a brighter future. “It feels amazing to have a place that’s mine,” he shared. Today, Brian sums up his transformation with three words: “Grateful, hopeful, and very self-motivated.”
His story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together to support its veterans. “If I didn’t go through HVAF’s program, mentally, spiritually, and physically, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today,” Brian reflected. “I haven’t felt this good in my adult life up until this point.”
It’s through the generosity of supporters like you that veterans like Brian can achieve these life-changing milestones. Your contributions truly make a lasting difference.
