Reflections on Renovation: A message from the CEO
June 10, 2025From the Battlefield to Brushstrokes

Jerry is a man defined by resilience, determination, and an indomitable spirit. A former Army and National Guard Veteran, and drill sergeant during Desert Storm, Jerry’s life has been a testament to overcoming adversity. He spent his early years in the military, where lessons of discipline and teamwork were ingrained into his character.
After leaving the military, however, Jerry found himself facing an entirely new battlefield—the transition to civilian life. Like many veterans, the road to stability was not easy. Jerry faced monumental challenges including the struggles of finding stable housing and employment. These difficulties culminated in an extended prison stint during a particularly rough patch in his life. Yet, despite these hardships, Jerry was not going to give up. “I never lost faith in my future, I have made mistakes, but they do not define me.”
His determination never faltered despite the circumstances, and when he was released, he was on a mission to find the resources and support needed to rebuild his life.
It was during this search for stability that Jerry discovered HVAF of Indiana and it became a turning point in Jerry’s life. It was here that Jerry found a second chance by gaining access to resources that laid a foundation for his recovery. Through HVAF’s housing programs, Jerry was placed in transitional housing—finally giving him the stability needed to start anew.
“Boundaries, stability, and teamwork… these concepts get you moving, make it possible to look to a better day, and HVAF was my team and better days were ahead.”

Jerry & his art!
The stability offered Jerry more than just a roof over his head but allowed him to rediscover one of his earliest passions—art. HVAF provided him with the art supplies he needed to begin creating again. With this support, Jerry poured his energy into his artwork, creating pieces that expressed his experiences and hopes for the future. His drive was unmatched, even at the age of 72. Unfortunately, as he was beginning to gain momentum, tragedy struck. After the fire at Manchester Apartments, Jerry lost everything, including the things he held most dear, his artwork and art supplies.
“It wasn’t just my art, I lost everything, all I had left were pictures of what I created saved on my phone, but I’m still here. I’m still surviving. I’m still, still able to give.”
Despite this devastating setback, Jerry refused to give up. Once again, HVAF stood beside him, providing the support he needed to recover, including clothing, shelter, and new art supplies. This crucial assistance enabled Jerry to continue pursuing his dreams. And that support has paid off! Today, Jerry has stable housing in a home all his own and has taken bold steps toward building a brighter future. He has partnered with a business associate and is working toward opening a gallery to showcase his art.

Jerry’s Art on Display!
“I know my art will make it up on the gallery walls, I can see it in my future.”
That future Jerry has been working towards, recently came to fruition. This summer, Jerry will see his dream realized as his artwork will grace the walls of the Indianapolis Central Library. Selected as one of the featured local artists, his art will be on display for the entire month of May, offering the community a glimpse into his powerful and poignant creations. Each one of the paintings on the gallery walls was one he created after the fire, a showcase of creation following tragedy. His art, born from a life of trials and triumphs, is a testament to his resilience and unyielding spirit.
“Even in a broken pot, flowers can live,” Jerry said, a phrase that encapsulates his unwavering belief in hope and renewal. This showcase not only marks a significant achievement in Jerry’s artistic journey but also serves as an inspiring message to others about the possibilities that arise from stability and dedication towards one’s goal. “I am blessed to have the resolve to press on towards my goals.”
Jerry’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of never giving up hope. His ability to transform hardships into opportunities has not only rebuilt his life but also positioned him to make an impact through his art.
As Jerry looks to the future, his story continues to inspire other veterans who are navigating the same challenging roads he once walked.
