More Than Just A Number: A message from the CEO
August 11, 2025A Family Reunion | Wesley’s Story

For Wesley, life after serving his country took a challenging and unexpected turn. After years of dedicated military service in the Army, he found himself facing battles he never anticipated.
The beginning of his hardships as a civilian came when his wife became severely ill and had to be hospitalized. Medical bills began to pile up, rent went past due, and soon the mounting financial strain became unmanageable. Ultimately, Wesley and his family were evicted from their home.
Faced with limited options, Wesley made the heartbreaking decision to send his three children to live with family while he and his wife borrowed a tent and camping equipment, finding temporary refuge in a public park.
The pain of being separated from his children compounded the weight of their situation. Struggling daily to survive, Wesley reached out to numerous organizations for help, only to experience rejection and repeated unanswered phone calls. Just as hope began to fade, HVAF stepped in..
“When every door seemed closed, HVAF was the one that opened and didn’t just give me a place to stay but a chance to start over.”
At HVAF, Wesley met his case manager, Anne, who went above and beyond to help his family in their time of need. Anne took the time not just to understand his challenges but to walk alongside him every step of the way.
“Anne treated me like a person, not a problem. She got to know me, my children, and what we needed”, Wesley shared. Anne’s unwavering dedication helped Wesley access HVAF’s supportive services, beginning with the Transition in Place (TIP) program, which provided him with stable housing while equipping him with tools for long-term independence.
Additionally, Wesley benefited from VetWorks, HVAF’s workforce development initiative to help veterans gain job readiness and succeed in the civilian workforce. Through training, resume development, and connection to employment opportunities, Wesley was empowered to start building a sustainable future.
Thanks to these programs, Wesley began to rebuild his life, piece by piece, with the goal of reuniting his family always in sight.
The most emotional and life-changing moment came when Wesley was finally able to stabilize his life and bring his children home. That reunion, marked by joy and relief, symbolized everything he had worked so hard to regain.
“HVAF didn’t just give me housing—it gave me my family back. They gave me hope and reminded me that I wasn’t alone,” Wesley said.
Wesley’s story is a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact HVAF and our community of supporters have on veterans. It’s not just about housing; it’s about restoring dignity, rebuilding lives, and bringing families back together. It’s about ensuring that no veteran feels abandoned or forgotten after they’ve given so much for their country.
