Finding Sanctuary
When you support HVAF, you give veterans like Brad a lifeline during their most vulnerable times. Brad served in the Air Force in the early 80s, answering the call to serve right out of high school because he “wanted to do his part.” After his service, transitioning back to civilian life was difficult—programs for veterans weren’t as readily available then as they are today. Years later, Brad found himself in Indianapolis, in desperate need of the support system your generosity creates.
Brad’s call for help came after facing a crisis at home. He had moved to Indiana to live with his son, but the situation quickly became unsafe. He had to make a difficult choice — his safety or a roof over his head. Choosing safety, Brad faced homelessness, a situation that was incredibly dangerous given his severe medical challenges. Brad suffers from kidney failure requiring frequent dialysis, liver issues, PTSD, and a history of two heart attacks. For Brad, managing life-saving medical equipment without stable housing was nearly impossible.
Brad connected with HVAF through the VA and found hope. HVAF’s team, including his case manager Sara, immediately prioritized his safety. Your contributions helped fund several weeks of emergency hotel stays to get Brad off the streets. However, a temporary stay wasn’t enough for someone like Brad, who needed long-term, stable housing to manage his health.
Thanks to YOU, HVAF secured a place for Brad at Vets Villa, one of our Permanent Supportive Housing properties. Knowing his mobility and health challenges, Brad was placed in a ground-floor unit for his safety. When Brad moved in, you helped make his transition smooth and comforting. Everything he needed for his new home, furniture, a bed, and essentials, was provided, removing the
stress of starting over.
For Brad, Vets Villa became more than just a home. It provided him with a safe and stable space to focus on his health. Now, after traveling to the VA for dialysis, he returns to a supportive environment where he can rest and recover. It’s also a community where he feels understood. “We’re all veterans, which is like a brotherhood,” Brad shares. “The people, everybody… we’re all on the same level surface.” Here, he’s found more than neighbors; he’s found companions who “have his six,” breaking years of isolation and giving him peace of mind.
Your support has transformed Brad’s life from one of constant survival to one of stability and dignity. “I don’t have to worry about my PTSD here,” he says. “I honestly half the time even forget to lock my door. You have nothing to worry about here.” For someone like Brad, who rarely made friends before, Vets Villa has created connections and a sense of belonging he hadn’t experienced in years.
Because of you, Brad’s story now reflects hope and a future filled with stability. Every dollar you give changes lives and creates a place where veterans can find not just housing, but healing. When Brad reflects on what your generosity means, his words say it all: “You’re doing the right thing. Because it’s the right thing to do.” Thank you for giving veterans like Brad the chance to write new chapters filled with safety, support, and a renewed sense of purpose.
