2025 PIT Count Shows 26% Reduction in Veteran Homelessness

The 2025 Point-In-Time (PIT) count, an annual event mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to assess the number of individuals and families experiencing homelessness on a single night in January, confirmed significant progress in the effort to end veteran homelessness—a remarkable 26 percent decrease year-over-year. This achievement is a powerful testament to the dedication and collaboration of organizations like HVAF of Indiana (HELPING VETERANS AND FAMILIES), alongside state and local partners, in addressing the housing needs of our nation’s heroes, marking another step forward in our collective mission to ensure every veteran has a safe and stable place to call home.

Building on this momentum, HVAF is continuing to expand its efforts to connect unsheltered veterans with essential resources and opportunities. A key initiative in this progress was the Indianapolis Unsheltered Surge Event on Monday, July 14th. In partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, HVAF joined forces with other local organizations to take part in the event. Together, they provided vital support to 24 unsheltered veterans, connecting them with housing resources, legal assistance, and critical services designed to promote stability and restore dignity.

Veterans were enrolled in transitional and permanent housing programs, and HVAF welcomed 8 veterans as the very first residents to move into the newly renovated units at Manchester Apartments North tower. This begins a new chapter following the devastating fire last year, and for the veterans who now have a safe and welcoming place to call home.
